Find Your Adventure: Riding in the Rose Parade 2016

Kayla with Bo; Karen with Chief.

I left off in the last post with us riding up the freeway off ramp to go into our staging area.  After a week of festivities and months of planning and preparing, the time was finally here.  The actual getting to ride in the Rose Parade!

We got into the staging area, where the horses peed.  We dismounted and got our boutonniere’s on and shed our jackets.

Do you know what your horse’s hoof angles are?

Granite Chief’s front hooves

Below is an excerpt from “The Proper Hoof Angle”, by Henry Heymering, RIF, CIF.  To read the entire article (it’s really good), scroll down.  Chief’s hoof angles are usually 54 to 56 degrees on his fronts.  I am always checking out hooves and shoeing jobs at rides.  Endurance horses are among the best kept horses in regards to their health and

Horse Ride Prep + My Favorite Horse Feed (aka Bo and Chiefy’s favorite feed)

Just back from the feed store, where I picked up a couple of bags of Elk Grove’s Sport Horse Mix.  They had to special order it for me.

Ever since I heard about the Sport Horse Mix I’ve been dying to give it a try. My horses have been on the regular Elk Grove Stable Mix formula for years, and they are thriving on it.  Not only do the horses love it, but it

A new ride season, goals and achievements

“They say to touch Heaven, your soul must go higher, to streets that are paved with gold and with pearls; But for me, it’s a ridge, high above an endless valley, being one with my horse, at the top of the world. Thank you Chief, for showing me the world thru your ears.”

A real quick update

I have been a real bad blogger…I have my entire Tevis ride report written up,  but have not had the time to post it along with the photos.

Since completing the Tevis on Bo I have done the EHSC 50 on Chief, the Grand Canyon 5 day XP ride on Chief and Bo, and the Virgin and Outlaw ride on Bo and Chief.

The Bryce XP starts tomorrow….it’s been

Death Valley Warmup, December 10 & 11, 2011

We had a pretty good time last weekend.  I rode Chief on Friday to mark trail along with Sue Wilkie and her horse Rocky.  Then, I rode Bo on the first day of the ride in the 50, and Chief in the 50 on the 2nd day.  The weather turned out great, and all things considered the turnout was decent – though still down over the previous year.  I think that may just be

2011 Ride Season Comes to a Close

This was how the first day of the 2011 XP started. We rode as carefully as we could and managed to get through the entire 2040 mile ride! This is Chief with Nannette's horse Wizard.

What a ride season I have had.  I was just looking back at this post from last year when I listed my goals for the 2011 ride season.

Here is an excerpt where I discuss why I was

Bryce 2011 XP – 2 days made for 16,000 miles, yay Bo and Cheefy!

We had a most excellent ride this year at the 5 day Bryce XP.  We headed down early to help with trail, as there was a severe blow-down of trees on the trail.  It took a lot of work to get everything cleared and the trail marked so that horse’s could get through.  The FS, Dave Rabe and Dwight, Ann and Dave Nicholson all really worked hard chainsawing and clearing trails.  Kerry Redente and
