Bill Thornburgh Family & Friends 2012

Bill Thornburgh Ride, Karen and Bo. Photo by Tony Wilkie.

Here is an album of photos from the Bill Thornburgh ride that I did in October.  I rode Bo both days and we had a great time!

They do a nice job on this ride – it’s well marked, there is plenty of water and hay on the trail plus they serve a wonderful dinner.  For awards we got tie-dyed t-shirts.  This must

Ride Photos – Outlaw and Virgin 2012 Pioneer Ride

Chief and I on the Thunder Mountain trail – we rode it to mark it, then I rode it again on both Chief and Bo during the actual ride.

We found some new trail for the ride this year, which turned out to be pretty spectacular.  Plus we got to ride on the stunning Thunder Mountain trail.

If you have

Tevis 2012 Ride Report: Part 2 – My Ride!

How exciting – one of our Tevis photos ended up on the September 2012 cover of Trail Blazer!

Tevis 2012

Karen Chaton

Getting to the start of the Tevis Cup is often the hardest part. It takes so much preparation, planning, and then of course worrying about every little thing that could or does go wrong. This year I had the hardest time making my mind up about going. In the end, I

Tevis 2012 Ride Report: Part 1 – Getting to the start is the hard part sometimes!

Good luck Angel from Jonni in TX. This would be her (the Angel’s) 2nd Tevis with Bo.

Two more Tevis angels — here Bo poses with my good luck Angel that would be going for her fourth time through, thanks to Susan G. One can never have too much good luck!

I should rename this post to be:  blogging on

Tevis 2012 – It’s Over and WE HAD FUN!

I’ll do a more thorough writeup about the Tevis ride later this week.  We had a GREAT ride this year!  All of the planning and preparation and hard work was worth it.  Even if I did enter late at least I got on the ball and we got ‘er done!

Bo was a rock star!  He is my hero!  (I feel that way about Chief too, but this post is all about BO!)

Tevis Preparation: Misc. Musings

My Renegade boots and crew shirts for Tevis 2012!

It’s interesting how much more effort it takes to prepare for the Tevis Cup than any other ordinary ride.  The easiest part is getting the horse ready, it seems.  That’s because I’m always riding anyway!  Then there is the paperwork, crew arrangements and all of the other organizing and planning that goes into getting ready for the Tevis.

Most of the rides that I

Tevis Preparation – Crew List for the Finish!

In addition to the following list, I’ll also have a page that includes everybody’s cell phone #’s.  Since I got my entry in so late, all of the stalls were taken.  It’s okay though, as they have a parking area for us to park in that will allow us to keep Bo on the trailer.    Which will make me happier, as I much prefer to be able to keep a close eye on

Tevis Preparation – Foresthill Checklist

Leaving the Foresthill vetcheck in 2010. Karen and Bo.

Foresthill is an easy spot to crew as there is plenty of room to park and it’s easy to get to.  The most important thing here is to get the horse in and cooled down so that you can pulse in and vet through right away.  The pulse criteria is now 64 and will be at that or higher from here to the finish

Tevis Preparation: Robinson’s Flat Checklist

This is my list for Robinson’s Flat, the first vet check on the ride where my crew will be allowed to meet me.  This check is logistically time consuming to get to as you have to drive all of the way back through Auburn to get to it.

This is a really busy and congested check with a lot of traffic on a narrow windy road.  It’s too far to run back and get

Tevis Preparation – Robie Park Checklist

I’ll update this again once I have it finalized.  This is a rough draft and the first part of many lists that I’ll put together for myself and my crew for Tevis.

For those that are not familiar with the Western States Trail Ride aka Tevis; it is a 100 mile one day point to point endurance ride.  That means that logistically, things have to be planned and prepared ahead of time to ensure
