XP’loring the Trail, 2000 Miles of Memories Part 2 of 3

This was the 2nd of 3 articles I wrote for Endurance News following the 2001 XP.

XP’loring the Trail, 2000 Miles of Memories. Be sure to click on the link to read the entire thing! Karen

Talk about anticipation! Most of the riders had waited months, years even…for the start of this ride and it was quite a spectacular one. The horses were loaded into trailers in St. Joseph, Missouri and hauled across the river to Elwood, Kansas. The morning was dark, humid, and dark clouds loomed menacingly overhead. Baseball sized butterflies fluttered around inside my stomach on the short trip to the start. We unloaded our already tacked up horses and just like that, we were off. After all the months spent dreaming about the ride here we were actually embarking on the adventure of a lifetime…

Preparing for the XP Part 1 of 3

This is an article I wrote for endurance news about preparing for the 2001 XP. “Preparing for the 2001 XP”.

I surveyed and interviewed many if not most of the riders that went on the ’01 XP and got a lot of varied responses.

Enjoy! Karen

Wild West Endurance Ride 2014

Bo & Karen at Wild West 2014. Photo by Baylor/Gore.

I know I haven’t blogged for a long time.  Bo colicked on April 9th and needed to have surgery for a 180 degree twist.  It was a bit of a roller coaster ride, to put it lightly.  We were very lucky that the surgery was able to correct the problem in what turned out to be a fairly uncomplicated and successful surgery.  It

Post Ride Recovery for the Endurance Rider

20 Mule Team 100 2014. Karen and Bo. Photo by Bill Gore.

Post ride recovery for endurance riders is not usually a topic that most of us think about. Usually after the ride is over, you just want to sit down and relax. But if you make wise use of the post ride recovery period, you will be well rewarded.

Recent studies have showed that an endurance athlete can significantly reduce the time

2014 20 Mule Team 100: One horse, one rider and a dog–a story of 100 miles through the desert with a happy ending

I always say that getting to the ride can often be the hardest part.  Last year I missed 20 MT because of my truck.  This year I was really determined to make it to the start line.  The obstacles this time weren’t as insurmountable as the last time – I only had to replace two tires on my trailer a few days before the trip.  Could have been worse, right?

You know you are

Endurance Ride Reports

Karen on Rocky at Mt. Charleston Challenge

Long before blogging was popular, I often wrote up my ride reports.  I thought I’d share some of them from a few of the rides I did on Rocky.  I’m really glad now that I wrote a lot of that stuff down.  Many of the details I might not have remembered otherwise.

I have so many great memories from the miles of trails I shared with

Gold Rush Shuffle Ride 2013

We in the West Region were lucky to have another new ride on the calendar – the Gold Rush Shuffle that took place over Thanksgiving weekend Friday – Saturday – Sunday.  This ride took the place of the previous Desert Gold ride that was in Monterey, CA.  The new ride is now held at Camp Far West in Wheatland, CA.  North of Auburn for those of you that aren’t from around these parts.

I

Diamond Springs Station – Where “What” is Buried

I wrote this in early 2001, printed it out and put it in my binder for the ’01 XP ride and I didn’t see it again for a decade.

My grandmother is now gone, so reading that part was really hard.  Her father (my great grandfather) rode a horse from Oklahoma City to New York and back twice, and from Oklahoma City to San Francisco,

Ride Report and Photos: Sesenta Anos 2013

I have a weak spot for new rides, or rides that I haven’t been to before that I *could* go to.  That was the case with John Parke’s Sesenta Anos ride that was held November 16 and 17, 2013 near Santa Barbara, CA.

The ride was to celebrate John’s 60th birthday.  It worked out well that I was able to stop in Ventura and visit with my family both coming and going.  And I
